  • Accelerating globalization of world markets and increasing interdependence of the economies of the world has made policy-making very complex, especially in the United States. One of the most debated subjects in recent years has been whether the U.S. is capable of simultaneously dealing with serious domestic challenges and economic challenges from the rest of the world. It is becoming more important for the generalist in economics, political science, business, and other areas to understand the issues confronting the American economy in relation to rapid global economic change.

  • This book consists of 20 short essays on different dimensions of international economic policy with specific (though not exclusive) focus on Asia. Topics covered include: exchange rate regimes and reserve buildup in Asia; global macroeconomic imbalances; financial sector liberalization; international capital flows to and from Asia; infrastructure financing in Asia; foreign direct investment (FDI) flows, production networks, manufacturing and outsourcing in Asia; the economic rise of China and India; and trade, financial and monetary regionalism in Asia. While the book covers important and often technical economic issues of contemporary policy relevance, it is written in a manner that is easily accessible to non-economists, including students of public policy, international affairs, international commerce and business, as well as policy-makers and interested observers.

  • Experience suggests that trade liberalization has contributed substantially to the remarkable growth of industrialised countries. However, for various reasons many developing countries have not yet been able to integrate successfully into global markets and reap the growth-inducing and poverty-reducing benefits of trade. This book argues that while developing countries are heavily represented in the WTO - accounting for about four fifths of its membership -there is still plenty of scope for the world trading system to work more effectively in their interests. The book examines the achievements of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations in reforming the world trading system and the challenges to future reforms. It begins with an overview of the genesis of the world trading system and moves on to examine the key issues as they relate to developing countries. These include further liberalization of agricultural trade; abolition of the Multifibre Arrangement; environmental and labour standards; competition policy; regional integration in South East Asia; and the implications for developing Asian countries of the liberalization of the Chinese economy and its WTO membership. Furthermore, the book discusses the links between trade liberalization and poverty reduction -drawing on the experience of Asian countries - and puts forward arguments on how trade liberalization could effect a greater reduction in poverty. This is a timely and succinct presentation of the critical issues relat...

  • A world model: economies, trade, migration, security and development aid. This bookprovides the analytical capability to understand and explore the dynamics of globalisation. It is anchored in economic input-output models of over 200 countries and their relationships through trade, migration, security and development aid. The tools of complexity science are brought to bear and mathematical and computer models are developed both for the elements and for an integrated whole. Models are developed at a variety of scales ranging from the global and international trade through a European model of inter-sub-regional migration to piracy in the Gulf and the London riots of 2011. The models embrace the changing technology of international shipping, the impacts of migration on economic development along with changing patterns of military expenditure and development aid. A unique contribution is the level of spatial disaggregation which presents each of 200+ countries and their mutual interdependencies – along with some finer scale analyses of cities and regions. This is the first global model which offers this depth of detail with fully work-out models, these provide tools for policy making at national, European and global scales. Global dynamics: Presents in depth models of global dynamics. Provides a world economic model of 200+ countries and their interactions through trade, migration, security and development aid. Provides pointers to the deployment of analytical capability through modelling in policy development. Features a variety of models that constitute a formidable toolkit for analysis and policy development. Offers a demonstration of the practicalities of complexity science concepts. This book is for practitioners and policy analysts as well as those interested in mathematical model building and complexity science as well as advanced undergraduate and postgraduate level students.

  • Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich BWL - Wirtschaftspolitik, Freie Universität Berlin (Otto Suhr Institut - Politikwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Politikwissenschaft, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: German trade unions' influence in industrial relations at the national level is curbed by the side effects of European integration. Supranationalization implies the transfer of regulatory power from the national to the supranational level. In the various policy areas, integration and supranationalization proceed at different speeds with regard to scope and level. This also applies to the neighboring policy areas of economic and labor policy. However, due to the overlap of these two policy areas, the asymmetrical integration of economic policy vis-a-vis labor policy leads to shifts in the German collective bargaining system, thus circumscribing the scope of German trade unions' action. More specifically, sectoral asymmetry leads to asymmetric political localization of the policy areas: Regulations in the economy are mainly taken at the EU level, whereas labor and social affairs remain national competences. Furthermore, the insertion of a supra-national layer is accompanied by a policy-theoretical change of the highest governmental and judicial authority from a hitherto (social-democratic) market-correcting consensus to a now market-making approach. This shift causes respective shifts at the national level as well. Additionally, the European Court of Justice possesses ...

Some new theories and issues concerning promotion of global peace are going on in the world today. Rather than world trade being dependent on world peace, as in the past, world peace and harmony may be influenced and brought nearer to reality through burgeoning world trade unlike in the past theories where trade was a function of global peace.

  • Trade policies form the main economic "buffer" between one national economy and another, i.e. the general and specific elements of each nation's trade policy interact directly or indirectly with those of other nations in all economic transactions across international borders. A nation's trade policy involves specific actions to encourage and promote or discourage foreign trade through the legal, financial and institutional environment within which foreign transactions occur. This book evaluates the trade policy applicable to the beef and maize sub-sectors in South Africa. Issues that are investigated include whether trade policy provides more or less protection than needed, whether it creates more openness for trade and the revealed comparative advantage of beef and maize. The study also shows the level of protection for inputs and outputs, in this case the beef and maize sub-sectors, using the ERP calculations.

Not according to currency expert Marc Chandler, who explains why so many are—wrongly—pessimistic about both the dollar and the U.S. economy. Making Sense of the Dollar explores the many factors—trade deficits, the dollar’s role in the world, globalization, capitalism, and more—that affect the dollar and the U.S. economy and lead to the inescapable conclusion that both are much stronger than many people suppose. Marc Chandler has been covering the global capital markets for twenty years as a foreign exchange strategist for several Wall Street firms. • Over the recent years, a prominent issue of global imbalances has centered upon increasingly large current account surpluses in emerging and developing Asia, corresponding to a huge deficit in the US. The US government and economists have accused China of keeping its currency undervalued as part of its export-led growth policy. Some also criticizes that other Asian countries tend to intervene in currency markets in order to keep their currencies weak against the dollar to stay competitive with Chinese goods. Thus, this book aims to investigate whether the Asian region, in particular China, can help global current account rebalancing through their exchange rate appreciation by using a global macroeconomic model, namely CAM, originated by Cripps and Godley (1978). From simulation results, real appreciation of Chinese yuan improves not only the US trade deficit, but also enhances trade balances for Japan and other Asian countries. Moreover, a reduction in China's trade surplus due to the yuan appreciation would be amplified if there was an expansionary fiscal policy in China. In addition, joint appreciation among Asian countries is totally superior to their unilateral appreciation.

  • The issues that increasingly dominate the 21st century cannot be solved by any single country acting alone, no matter how powerful. To manage the global economy, prevent runaway environmental destruction, reign in nuclear proliferation, or confront other global challenges, we must cooperate. But at the same time, our tools for global policymaking – chiefly state-to-state negotiations over treaties and international institutions – have broken down. The result is gridlock, which manifests across areas via a number of common mechanisms. The rise of new powers representing a more diverse array of interests makes agreement more difficult. The problems themselves have also grown harder as global policy issues penetrate ever more deeply into core domestic concerns. Existing institutions, created for a different world, also lock-in pathological decision-making procedures and render the field ever more complex. All of these processes – in part a function of previous, successful efforts at cooperation – have led global cooperation to fail us even as we need it most. Ranging over the main areas of global concern, from security to the global economy and the environment, this book examines these mechanisms of gridlock and pathways beyond them. It is written in a highly accessible way, making it relevant not only to students of politics and international relations but also to a wider general readership.

It demonstrates that the fundamentals of classical and neoclassical theories are still relevant today, albeit they have been adjusted and developed. Modern theorists explain international trade with more realistic approaches, such as Krugman et al.'s New Trade Theory or Porter's theory of National Competitive Advantage. The New Trade Theory includes the existence of increasing return of scale to describe and analyze world trade more accurately. Porter's theory of National Competitive Advantage explains international trade as a consequence of productivity differences between nations due to diverse environments and cultures within economies. Dunning and Porter take a globalized world economy into account in order to describe today's trade. The classical theories of Ricardo and Heckscher-Ohlin are limited in describing today's inter-national trade. However, they are still important factors which contribute to the explanation of real-world trade relations. Ricardo's theory describes inter-industry trade which in fact exists between Northern and Southern economies. The relevance of the approach as an explanation of global trade has to be limited due to the fact th...

  • The innovation capacity-building can contribute to improve the integration of developing countries in the world economy. The economic development has been a much discussed subject of the period after the Second World War until the 1990s. After the implementation of a global regulation system for trade and capital flows in the 1990s, the development economics has almost disappeared in favor of different theories on globalization, on finance and on international trade. The purpose of this book is to show that the innovation capacity building in developing countries is necessary to improve their weight in the world economy and to facilitate their economic ties with northern countries. However, there are important difficulties due to the lack of proactive economic policies. Our aim is to contribute to the revival of the development economics. The issue of improving the well-being of the world population as a whole is highly topical. However, studies neglect the need to give economic, financial, technological and political resources to developing countries to promote their own development. One of the most important means is to strengthen their innovation capabilities that allow them to better integrate into the world economy.

I was questioning the somewhat sudden high rates of obesity found in many developing countries today. I found several reasons for why obesity has sky rocketed in the global south, finding that most trends leading to obesity derived from the western lifestyle. One significant change between the western world and the developing world is that for the global south the transition to industrialization and development happened at a much faster pace. The sudden modernization has in many places led to extreme changes in behavior and lifestyle. The one trend that reoccured in most developing countries and had the highest effect on obesity rates was the infiltration of food products, mostly from western food corporations. I look at some specific practices made by companies like Nestle and others, as well as looking at behavioral changes in some of the worst hit areas like the Pacific Island nations.

  • In recent decades, the international economy has witnessed fundamental changes in the way manufacturing is organised: products are no longer manufactured in their entirety in a single location. Instead, the production process is often split across a number of stages located in countries that are frequently far apart from each other. By spreading out their manufacturing and supply chain activities globally through international investment and intra-firm trade, Multinational enterprises (MNEs) play a focal role in this reorganisation of production. Our ability to understand the global economy, therefore, requires an understanding of the interdependencies between the entities involved in such fragmented production. Traditional methods and statistical approaches are insufficient to address this challenge. Instead, an approach is required that allows us to account for these interdependencies. The most promising approach so far is network analysis. ‘Networks of International Trade and Investment’ makes a case for the use of network analysis alongside existing techniques in order to investigate pressing issues in international business and economics. The authors put forward a range of well-informed studies that examine compelling topics such as the role of emerging economies in global trade and the evolution of world trade patterns. They look at how network analysis, as both an approach and a methodology, can explain international business and economics phenomena, in particular, in ...

  • Diploma Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 1,0, University of Osnabrück (Fachbereich für Außenwirtschaft), language: English, abstract: After the successful experience of newly industrializing countries in East Asia (e.g., the East Asian Tigers: Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan) in the 1960s and Southeast Asia (e.g., the Southeast Asian Little-Tigers: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand) by the late 1970s, trade liberalization (TL) in less developed countries (LDCs) has been considered as a policy to achieve rapid economic development. The argu-ment, put forward for instance by Dollar et al. [2002, p.195], that ―TL is good for [economic] growth‖ and that ―[economic] growth, [in turn], is good for the poor‖ has since served as the departure point for the discussion of the link between TL and poverty among economists, researchers, and policymakers alike. Spurred on by the dramatic failure of import substitution industrialization (ISI) strategies, and with the advice and support from international financial institutions (IFIs), such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), Krueger [1998, p.1521], for instance, finds that the intervening period has seen a large wave of TL episodes in countries in Latin America, Middle- and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia respectively. Believing that TL is vital for economic growth and po...

  • Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The world economy has undergone enormous changes since the late 1980s. The trend of globalisation has more and more integrated societies and linked continents with one another. The result has been the development of free trade areas such as NAFTA (North American Free Trade Area), the EU customs union, and emerging markets in Asia. Countries had to cope with this development of a near free market economy and higher competition. Governments introduced new laws and regulations and great reforms and adjustments had to be made. The effects of the above led to great impacts on general business and the entire world economy. Companies started to enter new markets. To link all its facilities and office buildings and factories, the Intranet was established. With such an efficient LAN network, all the offices of a worldwide operating organization were linked with the central computer system of the company’s headquarters and data and information was easily accessible. At the same time, PC users discovered the Internet leading to a worldwide revolution and to the so-called Information Age. The Internet has experienced tremendous growth during the last few years in the western world and companies started to introduce their own web sites on the Internet. Basically, everyone had access to these company sites and firms started to advertise themselves and to offer their products and services online and developed new marketing concepts in the e-commerce business. The issues explored include the sustainability of China's continuing economic reform and the necessary reforms to sustain that growth; the considerable effects of her integration into the global economy and its implications for the conduct of Chinese economic policies, including the exchange rate regime; and the influence of China on the regional and world economy. China's competitiveness in exports has also begun to challenge the market share of developing and developed economies; this role in promoting intra-regional trade is also explored.
